A study conducted by researchers at Columbia University's Mailman School of Public Health in New York City and Queens Quiet Skies, an advocacy group that fights aviation noise and pollution, looked at the trade-offs of exploring more effect flight routes from New York’s LaGuardia airport and the health impact on people who live in common flight paths.
While automated flight systems at many large U.S. airports, including LaGuardia, improve flight efficiency, new flight patterns over populated areas increase the rate of health risks like heart disease, sleep problems, and anxiety disorders linked to noise.
Results of this study, which focused on flights over Flushing Meadows, a public park in New York, suggest the health impacts of changing flight patterns should be more carefully studied before changes are implemented.
